For an exam to meet rigorous testing industry standards, a pass mark must be set. The marks must be based on a method that supports the overall testing goals of validity, consistency, and fairness. This then helps to differentiate those who met the standards from those who did not.
Should you rely on the pass mark alone?
Pass rates can sometimes lead you in the wrong direction. If you only focus on the last few exam sittings where certain exams achieved high marks, there can be a tendency to think the exam for that particular topic must be easy.
Bear in mind that pass rates change with each sitting so don’t fall into the trap of focusing too much on one result. This data, whilst insightful, does not necessarily indicate that one exam is harder than the other. The key is to remember that these are professional exams and each exam demands your time, your patience, your perseverance and a lot of work to pass. The multiple-choice tests require just as much practice and preparation as case studies or course work assignments from an exam technique perspective.
So whilst it is good to see how well students performed in each exam session the pass rates shouldn’t distract you from the task at hand – studying and passing.
